My top 5 German cover versions of English hits

My top 5 German cover versions of English hits

Last week I told you about my 5 top English versions of German hits. Today I’ll tell you about my 5 top German cover versions of English hits.

Here they are, again in reversed order:

No 5: Udo Lindenberg’s ‘Sonderzug nach Pankow’

No 4: YTITTY with their German parody of ‘Somebody I used to know’

No 3: Die Ärzte ‘Gehn Wie Ein Ägypter’

No 2: Die Wise Guys with ‘Schlag mich, Baby, noch einmal’

And my favourite one is from Helga Fedderson & Didi Hallervorden from 1978. The title is ‘Du, die Wanne ist voll’ (You, the bathtub is full) and is a mixture of English and German words, especially German word which sound similar to English ones. Just in case you want to learn such wonderful sentences, here are the lyrics 😉

Didi:
I speak english – I can tanzen
and I look unheimlich gut
I have always gute Chancen
what say you denn da dazu!? Häh? Höhöhöhö…
Helga:
I stimm you zu – you are echt nicht schlecht (Didi: Ach Ja?Hö)
and your Stimme ist ein Hit (Didi: Ja, nich? Ja)
I want to be deine Partnerin (Didi: Da lässt sich drüber speaken)
you sing vor and I sing mit (Didi: Okay, einer after dem anderen)
Didi:
du
die Wanne ist voll
juhuhu
Helga:
Das heißt
the one that I want
juhuhu Honey
Didi:
Die Wanne ist voll
Beide:
Juhuhu
let’s go hinein
and then sei mein
Didi:
You have the badewanne that I want
Helga:
Didi
du makest me crazy
Darling
you and your Figur (Didi: Ach nicht doch)
komm nu’ sei doch nicht so lazy
schmus’ mit me
Didi:
You make me auch
ziemlich heiß auf you (Helga: Ouh, jaa)
I on you and you on me
Helga:
Komm
mach dich free for me
Didi:
Yes tonight oder nie
Helga:
Wie bitte ?
Beide:
Yes tonight oder nie
Didi:
du
die Wanne ist voll
juhuhu
Helga:
Das heißt
the one that I want
juhuhu Honey
Beide:
Juhuhu
let’s go hinein
and then sei mein

And here’s the video, enjoy!

EDIT 2019: It was suggested that I should add Peter Gabriel’s German version of ‘Games without Frontiers’ Spiel ohne Grenzen but unfortunately I couldn’t find a good enough video.

  1. I applaud the idea – it’s a great way to ensure German remains fun. The songs, however, not my cup of tea. Keep up the good work.
