Sowie oder so wie?

Last month I wrote a blog post about indem & in dem and how to work out when you write indem and when in dem.

Today’s blog post tells you about sowie and so wie.

sowie (plus, as well as)

Here are some examples:

In the following three sentences you could also have used und instead of sowie.

• Ich habe Bananen, Kirschen sowie Birnen gekauft. I bought bananas, cherries as well as pears.
• Das Projekt erfordert Zeit sowie Geld. The project requires time as well as money.
• Sie spricht fließend Deutsch, Spanish sowie Englisch. She speaks fluent German, Spanish plus English.

In the next sentences, sowie has been used instead of sobald (as soon as). Now it’s not part of a list of things but connects two clauses and pushes the verb to the end of the clause. Don’t forget the comma!

• Sowie es anfängt zu regnen, gehen wir nach Hause. As soon as it starts raining, we go home.
• Ruf an, sowie du zu Hause bist. Call as soon as you are at home.

so wie (just like, as)

• Sie lacht so wie ihre Mutter. She laughs just like her mother.
• Er fährt im August nach Deutschland, so wie jedes Jahr. He goes to Germany in August, as he does every year.
• So wie er es erklärt hat, ist es einfach zu verstehen. The way he explained it, it’s easy to understand.

3. Der Lehrer unterrichtet Deutsch sowie Französisch. The teacher teaches German as well as French.
4. Ich brauche Ihren Namen sowie Ihre Telefonnummer. I need your name as well as your phone number.
5. So wie sie singt, möchte ich auch singen können. I want to be able to sing just like her.
