Indem oder in dem?

So you’re reading this German text and come across a sentence like this one ‘Sie verbessert ihr Deutsch, indem sie jeden Tag Vokabeln lernt‘. And then you read ‘In dem Textbuch findet sie viele Vokabeln‘. And you think “Is there a spelling mistake or why is there an ‘indem’ and an ‘in dem’?”

Well, it’s no spelling mistake and both versions are correct. And – it’s easy to know which on is needed!

‘Sie verbessert ihr Deutsch, indem sie jeden Tag Vokabeln lernt’ means ‘She improves her German by (indem) learning vocabulary every day. ‘In dem Textbuch findet sie viele Vokabeln’ means that she finds lots of vocabulary in the (in dem) textbook.

In dem is ‘in + Dative followed by a masculine or neuter noun’, more commonly seen as ‘im’
Here are a few more examples:

• Das Buch liegt in dem Regal. The book is on the shelf.
• In dem Film geht es um eine spannende Abenteuerreise. The film is about an exciting adventure trip.
• Er wohnt in dem Haus am Ende der Straße. He lives in the house at the end of the street.
• In dem Artikel wird das Thema ausführlich erklärt. The topic is explained in detail in the article.
• In dem Moment begann das Meeting. At that moment the meeting started.

Indem means by and is used to describe the way in which something is done.
Here are some examples:

• Er hat abgenommen, indem er regelmäßig Sport trieb. He lost weight by exercising regularly.
• Ich spare Geld, indem ich mein Mittagessen von zu Hause mitbringe. I save money by bringing my lunch from home.
• Wir schützen die Umwelt, indem wir weniger Plastik verwenden. We protect the environment by using less plastic.
• Er hat den Job bekommen, indem er sich sehr gut vorbereitet hat. He got the job by preparing very well.

4. Du kannst Zeit sparen, indem du effizienter arbeitest. You can save time by working more efficiently.
5. In dem Zimmer war es sehr ruhig. It was very quiet in the room.
6. Der Schlüssel liegt in dem Schrank neben dem Fenster. The key is in the cabinet next to the window.
7. Sie hat ihren Vortrag verbessert, indem sie mehr geübt hat. She improved her presentation by practicing more.
8. Es gibt viele interessante Geschichten in dem Buch. There are many interesting stories in the book.
9. Wir haben das Spiel gewonnen, indem wir gut zusammengearbeitet haben. We won the game by working well together.
10. Es steht alles in dem Bericht. It’s all in the report.
