It had to happen sometime – Paul, the psychic octupus has died of old age.
So, who was he?
Paul was born in January 2008 at the Sea Life Centre in Weymouth, England. His loving parents were very proud of him until they noticed a weird streak in him: he could see into the future. They tried to talk him out of it but he wouldn’t stop. Eventually they told him to leave and he moved to the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, Germany. He spent every spare moment learning German until he thought he was fluent. Then he started to use his powers to earn a living.
The first time he predicted the outcome of games was at the UEFA Euro 2008. Unfortunately his German wasn’t fluent enough, he made mistakes and only predicted four out of the six games correctly. He still had a lot to learn.
He spent the next two years practicing his German, especially his grammar, and in summer 2010 he applied for the position as chief octopus for prediciting the outcome of the football world cup games.
His hard work paid off, he predicted all eight games correctly, including the fatal German – Spain game, where he predicted Germany to lose.
After his great success he decided to retire. The Spanish tried to persuade him to retire in Spain, but he said that Germany now was his home, his ‘Heimat’. He spent his last few months at his favourite place the Sea Life Centre in Oberhausen, where he died today of old age.
He will always be remembered for his Germany – Spain game prediction!
