Meet Barnaby! He is the star of a new book (more about it at the bottom) and he loves to cook.
Barnaby knows that good soup, like a good language, cannot be rushed. This simple recipe warms the heart and teaches you essential kitchen vocabulary. Put on your tweed jacket, grab a spoon, and let’s begin!

Die Zutaten/ The ingredients
- 3 große Kartoffeln (3 large potatoes)
- 2 Karotten (2 carrots)
- 1 Zwiebel (1 onion)
- 1 Liter Gemüsebrühe (1 liter vegetable broth)
- Eine Prise Thymian (A pinch of thyme)
- Der “Mondblüten-Pilz” (The Moon-Bloom Mushroom)
(Note: Since Moon-Blooms are rare???? , you may substitute it with another mushroom! We used Woodland mushrooms. They capture the exact spirit of the story. They are earthy, rustic, and—just like Barnaby—they belong to the quiet, slow world of the forest floor rather than the “fast” supermarket shelves.) - Viel Geduld (A lot of patience)

Die Zubereitung/ the instructions
1. Schneiden (chop)
Schneiden Sie das Gemüse in kleine Stücke.
(Chop the vegetables into small pieces.)
2. Anbraten (sauté)
Braten Sie die Zwiebeln im Topf an, bis sie goldbraun sind.
(Sauté the onions in the pot until they are golden brown.)
3. Kochen (cook)

4. Warten (wait)
Hier ist der Trick: Lassen Sie die Suppe langsam köcheln. Nicht hetzen!
(Here is the trick: Let the soup simmer slowly. Do not rush!)
5. Der Pilz (the mushroom)
Geben Sie den Pilz ganz zum Schluss hinzu.
(Add the mushroom at the very end.)
A little extra vocabulary
- der Löffel = the spoon
- der Topf = the pot
- rühren = to stir
- Lecker! = Delicious!
- Ich habe Hunger. = I am hungry.
The finished result – a very delicious soup!
