Learning German can help you when you travel, study, work, or talk to other people. If you are a beginner, simple study habits can help you learn faster and feel more confident.
You can improve your German step by step. The best way is to practise often and keep your study routine simple.
Try these simple ideas to learn German:
- Study a little every day. It is better to study for a short time each day than for many hours only once a week. This helps you remember new words and grammar.
Start with 5 minutes every day. Learning German for 5 minutes every day is better than not practising for an hour every week. You’ll most likely end up with more than 5 minutes anyway. For ideas check out my post How to learn German when you only have 5 minutes - Use German in daily life. Try to see and hear German every day. You can listen to simple songs, watch easy videos, or change your phone language. You can also write German words on small notes and put them around your room or house.
- Learn with another person. A teacher, tutor, or German speaker can help you. They can correct your mistakes and answer your questions. For example, I offer one-off lessons to help you when you are stuck.
- Get ready before you study. A short walk or a small break can help you focus. When your mind is ready, learning feels easier.
- Get enough sleep. Sleep helps your brain remember what you learned. If you are very tired, studying is harder.
- Practise difficult things. Do not only study easy words you already know. Spend time on the words and grammar that are still hard for you.
- Use many ways to learn. Read, listen, write, and speak. When you use German in different ways, it is easier to remember.
- Set small goals. Small goals can keep you motivated. For example, learn 10 new words this week or practise one short conversation. Or maybe you are going on a short trip to Germany soon. Think and then learn a few phrases that are relevant to your trip.
- Do not be afraid to speak. It is normal to make mistakes. The more you speak German, the better you will become. If you feel you don’t have anybody to speak with, try out these 5 ideas to practise your German speaking
Learning German takes time, but you can do it. If you practise often, use simple methods, and keep going, your German will get better little by little.
