If you are a regular reader of my blog you know that I often post about German compound nouns. Today’s post, however, is about German compound adjectives. Instead of putting two or more German nouns together we’re adding an adjective.
We’re starting with the adjective ‘reich’ – rich. It means that, no matter what the beginning of the adjective is, you need to add an appropriate ending to ‘reich’

Once you remember then, you know what ending to use in your own sentences.

- Der Mann ist reich. No ending to reich as the adjective is after the noun.
- Das ist der reiche Mann. Das ist die reiche Frau. Das ist das reiche Kind. Das sind die reichen Leute. Nominative, definite articles
- Das ist ein reicher Mann. Das ist eine reiche Frau. Das ist ein reiches Kind. Das sind reiche Leute.
Nominative, indefinite articles - Der Brief ist für den reichen Mann. Der Brief ist für die reiche Frau. Der Brief ist für das reiche Kind. Der Brief ist für die reichen Leute.
Accusative, definite articles - Der Brief ist für einen reichen Mann. Der Brief ist für eine reiche Frau. Der Brief ist für ein reiches Kind. Der Brief ist für reiche Leute.

Now let’s look at the different types of ‘rich’ you can use in German. I’ve mentioned 30, but there are a lot more.
- abenteuerreich – full of adventure
- abwechslungsreich – varied, diversified
- aufschlussreich – insightful
- belangreich – significant
- coffeinreich (also koffeinreich) – high in caffeine
- einfallsreich – imaginative
- einflussreich – influential
- eiweißreich – high in protein
- ereignisreich – eventful
- erfahrungsreich – experienced
- erfindungsreich – inventive
- erfolgreich – successful
- fantasiereich – imaginative
- geburtenreich – with a high birth rate
- glorreich – glorious
- hilfreich – helpful
- ideenreich – full of ideas
- kalorienreich – high in calories
- kontrastreich – full of contrasts
- kurvenreich – full of bends/ winding/ curvaceous
- lehrreich – instructive/ informative, educational
- neureich – newly rich
- risikoreich – high-risk
- sauerstoffreich – rich in oxygen
- siegreich – victorious
- steinreich – filthy rich
- stinkreich – filthy rich
- vitaminreich – rich in vitamins
- wortreich – verbose/ wordy
- zahlreich – numerous
