If you are a regular reader of my blog you know that I often post about German compound nouns. Today’s post, however, is about German compound adjectives. Instead of putting two or more German nouns together we’re adding an adjective.
Last week I wrote about the adjective ‘reich’ – rich: 30 German adjectives ending in -reich you need to know
This week you’ll get the opposite: arm – poor. It means that, no matter what the beginning of the adjective is, you need to add an appropriate ending to ‘arm’.

Once you remember then, you know what ending to use in your own sentences.

- Der Mann ist arm. No ending to arm as the adjective is after the noun.
- Das ist der arme Mann. Das ist die arme Frau. Das ist das arme Kind. Das sind die armen Leute. Nominative, definite articles
- Das ist ein armer Mann. Das ist eine arme Frau. Das ist ein armes Kind. Das sind arme Leute.
Nominative, indefinite articles - Der Brief ist für den armen Mann. Der Brief ist für die arme Frau. Der Brief ist für das arme Kind. Der Brief ist für die armen Leute.
Accusative, definite articles - Der Brief ist für einen armen Mann. Der Brief ist für eine arme Frau. Der Brief ist für ein armes Kind. Der Brief ist für arme Leute.
Accusative, indefinite articles - Der Brief ist von dem armen Mann. Der Brief ist von der armen Frau. Der Brief ist von dem armen Kind. Der Brief ist von den armen Leuten.

Now let’s look at the different types of ‘poor’ you can use in German. I’ve mentioned 20, but there are more.
- alkoholarm – low in alcohol
- anregungsarm – low in stimulation
- bettelarm – penniless
- bevölkerungsarm – sparsely populated
- bitterarm – extremely poor
- blutarm – anaemic
- coffeinarm/ koffeinarm – low in caffeine
- energiearm – low in energy
- fettarm – low in fat
- gefühlsarm – emotionally detached
- geräuscharm – low-noise
- kontrastarm – low-contrast
- nikotinarm – low in nicotine
- regenarm – low in rainfall
- salzarm – low in salt
- sauerstoffarm – low in oxygen
- schmerzarm – low in pain
- torarm – low in goals/ goalless (I bet we can all think of some goalless football games 😉)
- vitaminarm – low in vitamins
- wortarm – low in words

What can you do with these adjectives to remember them?
