Practical German for Football Games

Welcome to my last blog post based on our season 5 ‘Ask Angelika’ shows with practical or useful sentences you might hear or use yourself in certain scenarios.

Today we’re covering sentences you might hear or need when watching a football (soccer) game in Germany.

Let’s start with some easy phrases (not in the video):

  • Los, schieß! – Come on, shoot!
  • Tor! – Goal!
  • Abseits! – Offside!
  • Faul! – Foul!
  • Pass den Ball! – Pass the ball!
  • Gute Abwehr! – Good defense!
  • Kopf hoch! – Keep your head up!
  • Halbzeit! – Halftime!
  • Elfmeter! – Penalty!
  • Wiederholung! – Replay!

Der Schiedsrichter hat das völlig übersehen.
The referee completely missed that.

Unsere Mannschaft spielt heute wirklich stark.
Our team is playing really strong today.

Das war ein toller Konter.
That was a great counterattack.

Die Abseitsregel ist manchmal schwer zu verstehen.
The offside rule is sometimes hard to understand.

Das war ganz klar ein Handspiel im Strafraum.
That was clearly a handball in the penalty area.

Der Trainer hat die richtige Taktik gewählt.
The coach chose the right tactics.

Die Fans sind heute besonders laut und enthusiastisch.
The fans are particularly loud and enthusiastic today.

Glaubst du, dass wir in der zweiten Halbzeit aufholen können?
Do you think we can catch up in the second half.

Ich hoffe, unser Torwart hält diesen Freistoß.
I hope our goalkeeper saves this free kick.

Die Mannschaft hat sich in der zweiten Halbzeit deutlich verbessert.
The team has significantly improved in the second half.

“So ist Fußball. Manchmal gewinnt der Bessere!”
“That’s football. Sometimes the better one wins!”
This famous quote comes from Lukas Podolski after the 0-2 defeat in the 2006 World Cup semi-final against Italy.

What can you do with these sentences to remember them?
