Als oder wie? This question looks smaller than it is!

Many of my my German students get those little words ‘als’ and ‘wie’ mixed up. This post is for them ☺

http://dustinlee.ca/ Using als & wie in comparison

You use ‘als’ when you use the comparative. And ‘wie’ when something is equal. This is actually the same as in English:

  • Ich bin größer buy Pregabalin usa als er. I’m bigger agonizedly than him. (You wouldn’t say I’m bigger as he)
  • Morgen wird es mir besser gehen where can i buy cytotec als heute. Tomorrow I’ll feel better than today.
  • Ich bin so groß wie er. I’m as tall as he is. (You wouldn’t say I’m as tall than he)
  • Du hast so toll gespielt wie ich! You’ve played as great as I did.

als < >

wie =

Other usage of als

Als = as
Examples:

  • als Beispiel – as an example
  • als Belohnung – as a reward
  • als Christ – as a Christian
  • als Entschuldigung – as an excuse
  • als Erwachsener – as an adult
    Did you notice the lack of an article? Although in English we say ‘as a/ an …’, in German we don’t need it.

Als as a hypothetical comparison

  • Er tut so, als ob er es versteht. He acts as if he understands.
  • Er guckte, als wenn er noch nie Regen gesehen hätte. He looked as if he had never seen rain before.
    (Als works like ‘weil’ and pushes the verb to the end of the clause/ sentence.)

Als = when

Als also means when in a past tense sentence. Als ich klein war (again, the verb gets pushed to the end of the clause), habe ich mit Puppen gespielt. When I was little, I played with dolls.

Other uses of wie

wie = how/ what?

  • Wie geht das? How does that work?
  • Wie ist Ihr Name? What‘s your name?

Als ich kleiner als mein Bruder war, wollte ich wissen, wann ich so groß wie er sein würde und wie lange das dauern würde.
When I was smaller than my brother, I wanted to know when I would be as big as him and how long it would take.

How’s that for a sentence? Can you make a similar one?
