Wir suchen Deutschland – Weimar and Nürnberg

Wir suchen Deutschland – Weimar and Nürnberg

Last month Peter and Sabine visited Meissen and Leipzig, this month they’re off to Weimar and Nürnberg.

Weimar

Wo sind wir heute, Peter, sag,
an diesem stillen Sommertag! –
In Weimar, wo vor hundertfünfzig Jahren
Goethe und Schiller heimisch waren.
Du siehst vor dir das Goethehaus,
hier ging einst Goethe ein und aus,
der Dichter voller Ruhm und Glanz. –
Ich flecht’ ihm einen Blumenkranz.

When Peter and Sabine visited Weimar in 1948, it was still the capital of Thuringia; now the capital is Erfurt. Weimar has been home to many famous artists, composers and writers, but the poem only mentions Goethe and Schiller.  The picture shows Goethe’s house. For a little insight into ‘Goethes Wohnhaus’ have a look at this German video:

Nürnberg

In Nürnberg sind wir jetzt, der alten Stadt,
wo Dürer malte, Hans Sachs gedichtet hat.
Sieh dir die Häuser an, es lohnt,
die Meistersinger haben drin gewohnt.
in schmalen Gassen, winkligen Straßen
hat einst der Nachtwächter zur Ruh’ geblasen. –
Sabine, beiß in deinen Pfefferkuchen,
gleich müssen wir uns eine Bleibe suchen.

Nürnberg, where from 1509 -1529 Albrecht Dürer lived. His house can be seen in the picture and  the following video will show you how it is today:

The poem also mentions Hans Sachs, a poet, playwright, shoemaker and one of the ‘Meistersinger

The following video is of Bernd Weikl, an Austrian operatic baritone, singing as Hans Sachs in Richard Wagner’s ‘Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg’

Although the poem doesn’t mention the Frauenkirche, the church can be seen in the picture, so I’ll leave you with a video of the lovely clock from 1509.

At the end of next month Peter and Sabinchen will visit Passau and München.

EDIT 2019: In episode of Ask Angelika, Season 3, Episode 7, we also spoke about Nürnberg
