Star signs in German

Imagine you’re having a conversation with a German and suddenly you get asked: “Was ist dein Sternzeichen?” (Or if they are using the formal you: Was ist Ihr Sternzeichen?)

You know that ‘Stern’ is a star and can work out that ‘Sternzeichen’ are star signs. So you reply with Gemini, Libra or whatever your star sign is. But to your surprise, the German doesn’t know what whose star signs are.

That’s because in English we use Latin names whereas in German they are the straight forward names of whatever those signs are.

And here they are for you:

Aquarius – Wassermann (literally waterman) – 21 January to 19 February

Pisces – Fische (literally fish) – 20 February to 20 March

Aries – Widder (literally ram) – 21 March to 20 April

Taurus – Stier (literally bull) – 21 April to 20 May

Gemini – Zwillinge (literally twins) – 21 May to 21 June)

Cancer – Krebs (literally crab, but it’s also the word for cancer, the illness) – 22 June to 22 July

Leo – Löwe (literally lion) – 23 July to 23 August

Virgo – Jungfrau (literally virgin) – 24 August to 23 September

Libra – Waage (literally scales) – 24 September to 23 October

Scorpio – Skorpion (literally scorpion) – 24 October to 22 November

Sagittarius – Schütze (literally shooter) – 23 November to 21 December

Capricorn – Steinbock (literally ibex, a type of wild goat) – 22 December to 20 January

And here is a quick video with the pronunciation of the German words.
