Welcome to my second blog post based on our ‘Ask Angelika’ shows with practical or useful sentences you might hear or use yourself in certain scenarios.
Today we’re looking at sentences for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Was macht ihr Silvester?
What are you doing New Year’s Eve?
Here, the you means a group of friends. If you want to ask just one friend, you’ll need to say ‘Was machst du Silvester?’ And if asking one or more people formally, the question is ‘Was machen Sie Silvester?’
Wir wünschen allen Leuten einen ‚guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr‘.
We wish everyone a ‘Happy New Year’.
This greeting is only for new Year’s Eve and not for the 1st of January. The origin isn’t quite clear but literally translated it means ‘have a good slide into the new year’. That shows nicely why it’s for New Year’s Eve only.
Wir sehen natürlich ‚Dinner for One‘.
We’re watching ‘Dinner for One’, of course.
You haven’t heard of ‘Dinner for One’? Quick, check here: Same procedure as last year? You bet!
Wir haben Feuerwerke und Böller gekauft.
We bought fireworks and firecrackers/ bangers.
Um Mitternacht gehen wir nach draußen und lassen die Böller knallen.
At midnight we go outside and let the firecrackers go off.
Wir wünschen unseren Nachbarn ein ‚frohes neues Jahr‘.
We wish our neighbours a ‘Happy New Year’.
Am Neujahrstag machen wir einen Spaziergang.
On New Year’s Day we go for a walk.
Dann machen wir unsere Neujahrsvorsätze.
Then we make our New Year’s resolutions.
How to say New Year’s resolutions in German
Was sind deine Neujahrsvorsätze?
What are your New Year’s resolutions?
Here’s the video where Steven gets to practise saying and translating the sentences
What can you do with these sentences to remember them?
You can bookmark this post or make a vocabulary list with them. You can do that with any paper or electronic notebook. Or you could buy my notebook which I designed specially for German vocab learners. It has space for vocabulary lists and sentences. You can even choose one of two colours ☺
