Welcome to my next blog post based on our ‘Ask Angelika’ shows with practical or useful sentences you might hear or use yourself in certain scenarios.

Today we’re looking at sentences for a visit to a restaurant.

Haben Sie einen Tisch frei?
Do you have a table free?

Für 2 Personen?
For two?

Nein, für eine.
No, for one. (The ‘eine’ relates back to the noun ‘Person’ which is feminine. So even if you are a man on your own, you need to say ‘für eine’. Of course, you could also say ‘nein, nur für mich.’)

Die Speisekarte bitte.
The menu, please.

Ich möchte bestellen.
I’d like to order.

Vorspeise/ Hauptspeise/ Nachspeise
Starter/ Main course/ Dessert

For the next four sentences I’m giving you three choices each time, a masculine, a feminine and a neuter noun. Obviously, there are a lot more choices to eat, but if you know the gender of the noun you can then use the correct articles (einen or den for masculine nouns, eine or die for feminine nouns and ein or das for neuetr nouns.

Als Vorspeise nehme ich den Salat/ die Tagessuppe/ das Brot mit Kräuterbutter.
For starters I’ll have the salad/ soup of the day/ bread with herb butter.

Als Hauptspeise nehme ich den Fisch/ die Currywurst/ das Rinderfilet.
For the main course I’ll have the fish/ the curry sausage/ the fillet of beef.

Als Nachspeise nehme ich den Obstsalat/ die Rote Grütze/ das Eis.
For dessert I’ll have the fruit salad/ the red fruit jelly/ the ice cream.

Und zu trinken möchte ich einen Kaffee/ eine Cola/ ein Bier.
And to drink I’d like a coffee/ a coke/ a beer.

Die Rechnung, bitte.
The bill, please.

Stimmt so!
Keep the change!
