Halt! How do you say ‘stop’ in German?

A while ago I read somewhere (sadly I can’t remember where) a question about the verb ‘to stop’ and how to translate it into German. I thought, ‘what a weird question, just look it up in a dictionary’. And then today I looked it up myself and I can now understand why it might be a problem for a German learner.

So this blog post is my attempt to make some sense for you. Hopefully, after reading my sample sentences you will know which verb to use.

• aufhören
  Ich höre auf, Schokolade zu essen. I’ll stop eating chocolate.
• anhalten
  Ich halte den Wagen an, damit er einsteigen kann. I’ll stop the car, so he can get in.
• aufhalten
  Ich muss mein Pferd aufhalten, es rennt zu schnell. I have to stop my horse, it is running too fast.
• beenden
  Ich muss den Unterricht jetzt leider beenden. I’m afraid I have to end the lesson now.
• bremsen
  Die Ampel ist schon rot. Du musst bremsen. The traffic light is already red. You have to brake/ stop.
• einstellen
  Die Firma stellte die Produktion von Videokasetten ein. The company stopped the production of video cassettes.
• halten
  Ich halte gleich an der Ecke, dann kannst du aussteigen. I’ll stop right at the corner, then you can get out.
• Halt machen
  Der Junge macht vor nichts Halt. That boy stops at nothing.
• hemmen
  Der Arzt versucht, den Blutfluss zu hemmen. The doctor tries to inhibit/ stop the blood flow.
• stoppen
  Wenn mein Pferd einmal rennt, ist es nicht zu stoppen. Once my horse is running, there is no stopping it.
• unterbinden
  Ich muss den Streit der Kinder unterbinden. I have to stop the children fighting.
• unterbrechen
  Unterbrich mich nicht immer! Don’t always interrupt me (Don’t always stop me from talking)!
• seinlassen
  Lass das sein! Don’t do that!/ Stop doing that!
• stehen bleiben
  Ich blieb stehen, um wieder zu Atem zu kommen. I stopped to get my breath back.
• stillsetzten
  Wir haben die Maschine stillgesetzt. We have shut down/ stopped the machine.

• Halt!
