As you know I am always on the lookout for new German resources, especially resources for students to do as additional practice on top of their lessons. Usually I find and review online resources which are for free or can be topped up for a fee. But not everybody likes practicing some German online. So today’s review is about Erik Zidowecki’s puzzle book. Erik’s pocket puzzles are a great revision guide for beginners who don’t like practising with online activities, but prefer pen and paper.
In his “German Pocket Puzzles – the Basics” you’ll get 8 topics and 3 types of puzzles. The topics are:
Animals
Around the House
Clothing
Colours
Days, Months, Seasons
Family
Numbers
Parts of the Body
The first type of exercise is a word search, or 40 to be precise. You also get 40 word scrambles and 40 word quizzes. Have a look at the three examples:
At the end of the book is a dictionary with all the words learned and all the answers are also there. Each topic is covered in all three types of puzzles, allowing you to reinforce every new word. Each word comes with the English translation and with an explanation whether it’s an adjective, an adverb, a number, a verb or a masculine, feminine, neuter or plural noun.
I would like to see his books become as popular as those adult colouring books. Instead of colouring a picture why not use your colouring pencils and practise some German words at the same time? The pocket books are small enough to take with you on your travels, or maybe you need something else to do when watching TV (like me ☺). I tried the puzzles and found them to be relaxing, challenging, educational and great fun!
