German Idioms and Tongue Twisters with the letter E

Following on from last month’s blog post about German Idioms and Tongue Twisters with the letter D, here are those with the letter E:

Eulen nach Athen tragen
to carry coal to Newcastle

die Eselsbrücke
mnemonic

herumeiern
to dither

die Extrawurst
special treatment

heißes Eisen
hot potato

zum alten Eisen zählen
to write off as old

eierlegende Wollmilchsau
all-rounder/ jack of all trades device

And some extra idioms that are not in the video:

einen Eiertanz aufführen
to walk on eggschells

etwas aus dem Ärmel schütteln
to do something off the cuff

etwas durch die Blume sagen
to sugarcoat some not so good news

Now it’s your turn to try these tongue twister. How fast can you say them?

Das Weinfass, das Frau Weber leerte, verheerte ihre Leberwerte.

Esel essen Nesseln nicht, Nesseln essen Esel nicht.

If you wish, you can watch the video and see how Steven copes with pronouncing the idioms and working out what they mean.

Or you can listen to it on Spotify

Alternatively, you can think of ways to use these idioms in your German speaking or writing.

Do you know any German idioms with the letter E that I could have added to this list? And which idiom is your favourite?

Pin it now, read it later!
