Famous Germans – Richard von Weizsäcker

“Richard Karl Freiherr von Weizsäcker (15 April 1920 – 31 January 2015) was a German politician (CDU), who served as President of Germany from 1984 to 1994. Born into the aristocratic Weizsäcker family, who were part of the German nobility, he took his first public offices in the Protestant Church in Germany.” (Source Wikipedia)

As it would have been his birthday today, I again searched the internet for some easy and not so easy information in German for you. I couldn’t find anything that was easy, but the following websites or videos might be suitable for your level of German.

The following link takes you to the most likely easiest text about him: MONTAG, 15. APRIL, GEBURTSTAG VON RICHARD VON WEIZSÄCKER

Bundespräsident.de, which is about the current president, also has pages with lots of information about each former federal president including Richard von Weizsäcker (1984–1994)

I found his most famous Christmas speech on YouTube:

Richard von Weizsäcker 1985 Weihnachtsansprache

But what I enjoyed most while researching, was the following documentary from 2010 about him. It’s rather long and not too easy to understand, but have a go and watch it: Richard von Weizsäcker – Für immer Präsident

Of course, you could also read the German Wikipedia entry (and compare it with the English text)

How much do you know about Richard von Weizsäcker?
