One of the first songs German children learn is ‘Alle meine Entchen’, as it’s a very easy song. In fact, it’s so easy, you can sing along with it, even if you don’t speak any German.
A close English translation (to make it fit the song) would be:
All my little ducklings,
(are) swimming in the lake,
swimming in the lake.
Their little head in water,
and little tail up high.
Why don’t you sing it together with this Youtube video?
Of course, if you don’t like children’s songs, you may wish to sing the techno version of the Wise Guys :
OMG, that video is so funny! From the hamster at the beginning to their bobbing up and down as they since. I bet it’s a cult hit.
(Un)fortunately, that’s not the version the children learn ๐
I’ll bet my two (American) goddaughters know this one, as they are learning German in a special Saturday school. ๐
Oooh, ask them to sing it to you, and if they’re old enough, you could show the the techno version ๐
Well, I’m sure that song is going to be stuck in my head all day now, Angelika ๐ Great idea to use songs to learn a language – it makes learning a lot of fun doesn’t it?
I’m sorry to hear that, Angela ๐
Well, not really, as I think songs are a fantastic way for learning a language!
We translated it to rhyme as
All my little ducklings,
Swim without a care,
Heads down in the water,
Tails up in the air.

That’s a great rhyming translation, thanks, Sarah.
