Today’s topic for  “Deutsch am Donnerstag” (German on Thursday) is Steine – stones

die Steine – stones
Stein can also mean brick, jewel, block or rock but you would know from the rest of the sentences which one it is. If I said about a woman ‘Sie trägt schöne Steine’ and you looked at her, you would know whether I meant ‘she’s wearing nice jewellery’ or ‘she’s carrying pretty stones’ 😉

“Es gibt viele unterschiedliche Steinarten. Steine gibt es in den unterschiedlichsten Farben und Größen. Ganz kleine Gesteinsstücke nennt man Sand, größere Gesteinsstücke nennt man z. B. Kiesel, Fels….
Viele Gesteine bestehen aus unterschiedlichen Bestandteilen, den Mineralien.
Man kann eigentlich sagen, dass die ganze Erde aus Steinen besteht. Alles, was auf der Erde ist, und kein Lebewesen oder Pflanze ist, ist aus Gestein.”
